Learner Driver Insurance

what is learner driver insurance?

Blackpool Driving School work in partnership with Marmalade’s Learner Driver Insurance  to help you to get those all-important extra hours of driving practice by offering flexible and comprehensive cover for provisional licence holders to drive a family member’s or a friend’s car.

Cover is available for 30, 60 or 90 days and the best news is that it won’t affect the owner’s No Claims Discount. It’s simple to get a quote and you can be covered in minutes. After you’ve held your first policy with us, if you need to top up your driving practice, you can also choose to renew for 7 or 14 days.

how does learner driver insurance work?

Learner insurance is designed to sit alongside the main insurance policy on the car that you’ll be practising in – providing fully comprehensive cover when you’re driving (and during your driving test if you want to use the same car). This means if you’re involved in an accident while driving as a provisional licence holder, a claim would be made on this policy – leaving the car owner’s policy untarnished.

Adding a learner driver to a main motor insurance policy can be expensive – and some insurers may not allow you to add a young, or provisional licence holder to the policy. Luckily, Marmalade’s short term learner driver insurance is the perfect solution to keep everyone happy – as it’s affordable, flexible and allows the car owner to stay in control of their own No Claims Discount!

what cars are covered by learner driver insurance?

Cover is for a specified car and is available for most family cars (up to insurance group 32 and £30,000 in value). It’s important that the car remains insured by the car owner the whole time the learner insurance policy is in force – as this isn’t suitable as main insurance for a car. If you’re a provisional licence holder and you own the car, then our New Driver Insurance may be more suitable as it’s an annual policy that will cover you on your own car, before and after you pass your test.

what will i be covered against?

The cover on the policy is fully comprehensive so you can be reassured that you’re covered against fire, theft, malicious damages and any accidents while you’re driving the car.

how much does it cost?

Learner insurance costs from as little as £1.87* per day, fro Young Marmalade based on buying a 90 day policy – with a 30 day policy starting from £70.46. Price and cover are dependent on age and location – it’s simple to get a quote – all you need to do is let us know your age and postcode, and we’ll give you a price. Then just fill in a few more details and you could be on the road in minutes!

what if i need to make a claim?

We hope you don’t need to claim, but if you do, simply call our underwriter, Zenith Marque, directly on 01227 284700 and they will guide you through the process. It’s always a good idea to make sure you have all your policy details to hand when you call to make a claim. The excess you’ll pay if you make a claim is just £250.

how do i renew my learner driver insurance?

It’s quick and easy to renew your insurance – all you need to do is log in, check your details are correct and select how long you wish to renew for, and pay. If you’re close to passing your test, you have the additional option of renewing for 7 or 14 days.

frequently asked questions

Who can supervise my driving?

Any driver who is over 25, who currently holds a current valid full UK driving licence, and has done for at least three years, can supervise you. It doesn’t even need to be the person who owns the car. Of course, you’ll need the permission of whoever owns the car – we’re sure you knew that anyway!

Can I change the car on the policy?

Provided it meets the criteria of our policy and you contact us to update the vehicle details, you can change the car you are insured to drive in.

Can I drive any car?

The policy only covers you for driving the car you took your policy out for. But don’t worry, you can always take out another policy for any other cars you might wish to drive. And you can even switch to a different car partway through your cover.

What happens when I pass my driving test?

Cover will stop immediately when you pass, so make sure you have someone to drive you home! If you let us know when you pass (which you will do!) we’ll refund any full 30 days’ worth of cover you have left on your policy for a small administration fee of £10. Unfortunately we cannot refund any incomplete 30 days’ cover you have left when you pass your test.

Our New Driver Insurance can help you to get on the road in your own car, or you parents’ car in a simple, safe and affordable way – get a quick quote here.

Thinking about buying a car when you pass? It’s worth looking at our Cars for Young Drivers which combines a new car and Free Insurance, for the first 12 months, or an insurance contribution! (depending on your postcode)

Can a learner driver insure their own car?

No not with this policy. The policy is designed to sit alongside an existing motor policy of a car owned by someone else. Take a look at our New Driver Insurance (your car), which is designed to cover you to drive your own car and will cover you on a provisional and full licence!

My parents are worried it will affect their insurance. Is this dual insurance?

It won’t affect the main insurance at all! Marmalade Learner Driver Insurance is a temporary risk policy on the learner driver. Here is the technical bit… Dual Insurance occurs when, in the case of insurance against loss or damage, the same items are insured against a certain risk under more than one insurance policy. Our Learner Driver Insurance provides cover for drivers who hold a provisional UK licence and are not named in the main insurance policy covering the vehicle and therefore it does not cover the same risk as the main policy.
